The walnut season started off slow in 2015, but towards the end of the early harvest farmers began to realize that this crop may have overshadowed their crop from the previous year. California’s harvest last year was around 570,000 tons and this year looks to be at 575,000 tons according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. However, there does seem to be some variation as to the reported amounts harvested by various farmers. There have been a slight increase for some farmers, while others think it may have been a slightly silmer year. One thing that stands out is the size of the walnut has been on the smaller side, compared to the large percentage of jumbo nuts from last year. With the increase in nut production and hopefully a rainy season ahead, we expect there to continue to be a large demand for our high hoppers for the following year.
